8 Things To Do Before Picking Your Wedding Date

Picking your wedding date is one of the biggest decisions in the planning process. Here's our list of things to do before choosing your date.

So when's the wedding?! Kiiiidding! We know people are asking that a lot lately. It's the first question someone asks, but probably the last one you know the answer to. That's because choosing your date is a big decision and takes time to decide.

So, how do you choose a wedding date? Grab a calendar and follow the tips below.

1. Decide on how many months you need to plan

The planning time frame is different for every couple, but we recommend an engagement of at least 16 months. Generally, venues and vendors book up anywhere from 8 months to a year in advance. Give yourself plenty of time to research and book vendors if you want to make planning less stressful.

2. Block out holidays and big events

Take your calendar out and blackout any major holidays, big events, sporting events, or religious holidays. People are more likely to decline during these times and they may be more expensive to book.

3. Block out other people's weddings

Make sure you aren't overlapping on the same weekend as a friend or family member's wedding. Also, find out if any acquaintances are having weddings on your date. Some of your friends or family may be going and you want to make sure they aren't on the same day.

4. Block out work projects or travel

Cross out any major work projects or travel that you're involved with. You want to buffer a lot of time between this so you aren't overwhelmed.

5. Make sure your must-have guests are available

Ask your closest friends and family if they are available on the dates you are thinking about. You want to make sure they can come without any conflicts.

6. Know when wedding season is

Depending on your budget, you may want to choose a month outside of wedding season. Wedding season starts in late spring and goes until early fall. The peak months are June, September, and October. Winter is usually cheaper (depending on what part of the country you live in) except for December when there are a lot of holiday parties booking up venues.

7. Know your budget

If you are trying to keep costs low, know that a Saturday evening wedding is the most expensive option. Friday evening is less expensive and Sunday afternoon is the cheapest.

8. Find out if your must-have venue or vendor is available

If you have a venue or vendor that you can't get married without, then you need to check with them and see if they are available on the date you want. Remember, venues that are in high demand can be booked far in advance.
